Assoc. Prof. Marlon James Sales acted as docent on 12 March 2024 at the opening of the exhibition “Nebrija en Filipinas” (Nebrija in the Philippines) at the Intramuros exhibit hall of the Instituto Cervantes. The exhibit commemorates the life and times of Spanish grammarian Antonio de Nebrija, whose 500th death anniversary was commemorated in 2023, and his contributions to missionary-colonial linguistics in the Philippines.
Dr. Sales wrote the four panels on Philippine missionary linguistics as addenda to the original Spanish-English panels curated by Dr. Teresa Jiménez Calvente.
Inaugurating the exhibition were Spanish Ambassador Miguel Utray, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo José de Vega, Instituto Cervantes Director Dr. Javier Galván, and representatives from the Fundación Antonio de Nebrija and the Miguel de Benavides Library of the University of Santo Tomás, who kindly lent some of their historical pieces for the opening.
Dr. Sales is set to deliver a longer lecture on Nebrija and Philippine missionary linguistics in April. “Nebrija en Filipinas” runs until 12 June 2024.
